Description
Bourton House is a detached house dating from the late 17th century, with a date of 1667 marked on an internal door. It was remodelled in the early 18th century and again in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with freestone dressings and French quoins, topped with a hipped slate roof featuring a moulded parapet and cornice, along with rubble stacks. It has two storeys and attics, comprising five bays with glazing bar sash windows that have arched overlights in raised plain surrounds, complete with quoins and a keystone. A moulded string course runs above the ground floor. The central entrance features a panelled door within a doorcase that has Doric pilasters and a carved shell hood supported by consoles, with arms carved into the shell. To the left, there is a two-storey, three-bay wing.
Inside, the dining room showcases raised and fielded panelling along with six-panel doors. The hall and living room are also panelled. An open well staircase features a panelled, closed string with twisted and turned balusters, and a decorative moulded ceiling. The nursery, located in the rear left room on the ground floor, has ovolo moulded beams and a panelled, studded door that is dated RM 1667.
