Description
The Old School House is a former school that has been converted into a private house, located next to a 20th-century school to the south. A plaque on the south side indicates that it was built in 1791. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone and features a concrete tile roof on the main section, while a small wing at the east end has a stone slate roof. There is a stone end stack with a moulded cornice on the left and a brick end stack on the right. The main range is L-shaped, with a rear wing to the left and an additional small wing to the right.
The facade has three windows with pointed arches, voussoirs, and paired 4-pane casements at the base. The central bay projects slightly and is topped with a shallow pediment and a round plaque that reads: "This Charity School/erected AD 1791 was founded and/endowed by ROBERT PLEYDELL/Lord of this Manor AD 1722." To the left on the ground floor, there is a similar window with 6-pane casements. The remainder of the ground floor is obscured by the 20th-century school building, which is not of special interest. The right wing features a large square window on both the front and rear, adorned with decorative original octagonal leading. The main entrance is located on the left-hand gable end facing the street, featuring a 20th-century door, a tall plain fanlight with a timber lintel, and a 3-light wood casement with a timber lintel above.
