Description

Stone Gables is a building comprised of a large cottage and a smaller one, originally three cottages. The main structure dates largely to the 17th century, with a later addition from the late 19th or early 20th century. It is constructed of rubble stone, with coursing in the later section, and has a stone slate roof. A large stone ridge stack rises from the north end of the cross range, while brick stacks are present elsewhere. The building is arranged in a 'T' shape, with a single-story and attic cross range and a two-story stem, the latter containing an attic in its 17th-century section. The north end features two small gables and a central gabled dormer. Small, two-light UPVC windows are found in each gable, with larger, similar windows below, all featuring timber lintels. A small, stone-framed newel light with a square hoodmould sits between the floors, with a small recessed square light near attic level. The east gable end of the cross range has a two-light stone mullion with a square hoodmould on the first floor and a two-light UPVC casement with timber lintel below. Two-light stone mullions with square hoodmoulds survive on the east side of the first floor, on the west side of the ground floor of Stone Gables, and on the first floor of the later addition (No. 41). The remaining windows are mostly wood casements with timber lintels. Large, projecting gabled porches are located to the east and a smaller one to the west.
