Description
The barn and stables at Birch Farm, likely built in the early 18th century, features a stable bay to the right and a projecting stable block in front. The barn is constructed of rubble stone with quoins and has a stone slate roof. It consists of four bays with collar and tie beam trusses. There is a former projecting gabled cart entry on the west side that has been blocked in with a lean-to added outside. To the left of this gabled entry, there is a large lean-to with a two-light stone mullion window and a square hoodmould on the north wall. On the east side, there is an opposed flush entry with double timber doors and a timber lintel. The stable bay to the right has a stable door and seven stone steps leading up to a recessed plank loft door with a cat hole. A large slit vent is located in the gable of the right-hand end, along with a two-light stone mullion window with a square hoodmould on the ground floor. The stable block projects forward on the east side to the left of the barn entrance and contains three loose boxes with stable doors and an office at the east end. The roof of the stable block extends as a sheltered walkway in front, supported by four stone pillars. The gable to the east is coped with kneelers and features a two-light stone mullion window with a square hoodmould.
