Description
Birch Farmhouse is a large farmhouse dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. It is constructed of rubble stone with flush quoins, and has a stone slate roof with stone stacks, located at the left end and as a large ridge stack to the main range and wing to the left. The main range is two storeys and an attic, with a catslide roof and a cross range to the right, joined to a long single-storey wing with an attic and a rear extension. The south front features the gable end of the cross range to the right, which is blind with the exception of a small stone light with a square hoodmould on the ground floor, and a similar blocked opening at the gable apex. The main section has 3- and 2-light stone mullions to the first floor, one gabled dormer, and a large 3-light stone mullion to the left on the ground floor, leading to a nearly central square-headed stone porch with a chamfered shallow Tudor arch. The wing to the left contains one 4-light stone mullion, two single lights, and a doorway, all with a square hoodmould. Two large, flat-roofed dormers were inserted in the 20th century. The right-hand return side has two 2-light stone mullion and transom windows with leaded lights to each floor. The rear gable end of the cross range incorporates 2-light stone mullions to each floor, with a dripmould to the ground floor only. At the base of the catslide are two 2-light stone mullions with arched lights and a dripmould, likely dating from the 19th century.
