Description
Dunfield House is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a large detached house. It likely dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with an earlier small wing at the rear that may be from the mid to late 17th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone with alternating flush quoins and features a stone slate roof with stone stacks that have offsets.
The house is designed in a double range, consisting of two storeys and an attic, with a small two-storey linking unit to the earlier single-storey wing that also has an attic, which may have been the original farmhouse. The main facade faces west and has three windows, featuring three-light stone mullions set in plain stone frames. The right-hand end of the house appears to have been added in the 19th century, using quoins instead of a plain frame.
On the ground floor, there are two three-light stone mullions, and originally there was a central door, which is now obscured by a 19th-century gabled porch that has a chamfered depressed stone arch and a keystone, in front of the original door frame that features a square chamfered arch. The inner door is from the 19th century. There is also a three-light stone mullion and transom on the far right, which is part of the 19th-century addition that projects beyond the rear range. The house has two small gabled dormers with paired wooden casements.
Inside, the property retains several chamfered and stopped beams, along with a large stone bressumer fireplace in the front range. The small wing at the rear features a four-light stone mullion and a single dormer on the north side. The interior of this wing includes a large corner fireplace on the ground floor (in one room only) with an oak bressumer, and a chamfered and stopped Tudor arch fireplace above it.
