Description

Poplar House is a large detached house built in the early 18th century and enlarged in 1817. It features coursed rubble stone with alternating flush quoins and a stone slate roof, with artificial stone slates on the rear. The house has short end stone stacks with moulded cornices. The main structure consists of two storeys and an attic, with a two-storey extension to the left that was originally used for a dairy and cheese room but is now in domestic use. There is also a rear lean-to that spans two storeys.

The main block was raised in height in 1817 above a string course over the ground floor windows, and it features a semi-circular date plaque with a moulded edge and the initials HK above the original location of the front door. The façade includes four windows with 2-light stone mullions and transoms in plain surrounds. On the ground floor, there are two original 18th-century 2-light mullion and transom windows to the left, a 3-light window to the right, and a new 2-light window in the same style to the right of centre where the front door used to be. The entrance is now located at the rear, accessed through a 20th-century corner stone porch. The house also has two small gabled dormers. The rear lean-to features cambered brick arches, likely from the early 19th century, following the arrival of the Thames and Severn Canal which made brick more readily available. There is a small brick stack on the lean-to.
