Description
Down Ampney Church of England Controlled School is a primary school built in 1853 for the Earl of Ducie and enlarged in the 1880s. The building features coursed and squared stone on an offset plinth with alternating flush quoins and a stone slate roof with coped verges. It consists of a single main range that includes a tall single storey and a projecting stepped bell tower, along with a lower additional wing set back to the right, which has a large projecting gabled porch.
The main building has five-light stone mullions flanking the bell tower, which is topped with a wooden cover for the bell and features a clock on the south face, inscribed with the verse: "Make haste / when I chime / No waste / like that of time." There is a stepped three-light window on the left-hand return. The porch contains an arched stone doorway with a wide plank door and an inscription above from Psalm 34, verse 11. The room behind the porch, added as an infant room in the 1880s, has a stone stack at the right end. There is also a small rear outshut to the main block.
