Description
The cross on the green at the west end of Down Ampney is a roadside cross, built in 1878 as a replica of a 14th-century cross. It features three large stone steps, the bottom step having a moulded edge and base that forms a seat. The structure has a large square base stone and a smaller square-based shaft that rises as a broach spire to an octagonal tapering shaft. At the top, there is a large gabled head with a Crucifixion scene carved on the east side, entwined initials on the west side, and diaper work on the north and south sides. This head sits on a capital-like section at the top of the shaft, which is adorned with carved leaf decoration at the corners. There is an inscription at the base of the cross on the east side, though it is mostly indecipherable.
