Description

The gatepiers at Down Ampney House date from the late 18th century and are located on the perimeter wall to the east of the house. There are two pairs of gatepiers, both identical in design. The inner pair stands approximately 4 meters high, while the outer pair is about 3 meters high. Each gatepier is square and constructed of ashlar stone at the base, featuring a moulded top edge. They rise to a very wide moulded cornice with a stepped square cap, which is topped by a large ball finial. Between the inner and outer pairs on both sides, there are single wrought-iron gates, and double matching gates between the inner pair, all adorned with trefoil heads on each railing.
