Description

A pair of semi-detached cottages dating from the mid-19th century, located set back from the road in Down Ampney village. The cottages are constructed of coursed and dressed stone with alternating flush quoins, and have a stone slate roof with coped verges. A central stone ridge stack features grouped flues. The cottages are arranged in a single range with a single storey and attic, and each has a projecting single-storey porch. Each porch has a coped verge, and each cottage has a small gable containing a two-light stone mullion window with a metal casement, set within a flush stone surround. A similar window, with smaller panes, is located below. Chamfered stone Tudor archways lead to each porch; No. 16 has a plank door, and No. 17 has a half-glazed door. The cottages represent a good example of 'estate' cottages.
