Description
The Elizabeth monument and Samuel Rowsham monument are located in the churchyard of the Church of St. James, approximately 9 metres south of the south porch. These are two chest tombs, one dedicated to Elizabeth, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, and the other to Samuel Rowsham, who died in 1776. Both monuments are made of limestone. The tomb for Elizabeth features a stepped base, plain sides, and an almost illegible inscription within a panel at the east end, topped with a moulded margin. The Samuel Rowsham tomb measures about 3 metres in length and has a thick flat-chamfered base, plain sides, and inscriptions at the east end and on the north side. The overall form and condition of the Samuel Rowsham tomb suggest it may date from the 17th century, with the legible inscription likely being added later.
