Description
Top Cottages and The Methodist Chapel is a former row of five cottages, with three of the cottages on the right now converted into a Methodist Chapel. The buildings date from the 17th century, with significant alterations made in the 19th century to the three end cottages to create the chapel. They are constructed from coursed, squared, and dressed limestone, topped with a limestone slate roof and flat coping. There is an ashlar stack on the left gable end.
The left cottage features a 19th-century, two-light gabled dormer that extends from the eaves, along with a single four-light stone mullioned window fitted with 19th-century metal windows that have glazing bars, topped with a stopped hood. There are traces of red colour wash on the exterior, and a wide, low, painted plank door is located to the right of the window. The right cottage has two 19th-century, two-light gabled dormers from the eaves, which contain 20th-century metal windows with glazing bars. It also has a 19th-century, three-light metal window with glazing bars and a painted plank door to the right, both under a 20th-century stopped hood. Another 19th-century, three-light metal window with glazing bars is found to the right under a stopped hood.
The Methodist Chapel is a single-storey structure featuring two three-light mullioned and transomed windows with leaded panes, and raised gables with flat coping above. The left window is flanked by single lights with moulded surrounds. There are four-centred arched porchways, flush with the facade, located at both the far right and far left, each with a projecting flat canopy supported by curved brackets. The doors within the porches are painted planks. The Methodist Chapel is listed for its group value only.
