Description
The stable block, located approximately 25 meters northeast of Sherborne House, was originally built as a stable and coach house for Sherborne House, commissioned by James Dutton, who passed away in 1776. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof with ashlar stacks. It is designed in a square quadrangle layout with a central courtyard and stands two storeys tall.
The entrance front on the north side has a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with a total of 2:5:5:2 windows. It features a central round-headed entrance arch that extends to the first floor, topped with an open triangular pediment that has a modillion cornice. The cornice continues at the eaves level on either side of the pediment, which also includes a clock. At the time of the last survey in February 1986, the windows were in the process of being replaced. The ground floor has wood-mullioned cross windows with glazing bars, while the first floor features two-light casements with glazing bars. There is a band between the floors, and the south front mirrors the design of the north front.
The walls facing the courtyard have 20th-century double doors with glazing bars and fanlights set within round-headed surrounds of two orders, complete with imposts. The first floor is lit by six-pane sash windows, and there is a band between the floors. The building has axial stacks and an octagonal wooden louvred lantern on the north side, topped with an ogee-curved leaded roof and a weathervane at the apex.
