Description
The Malt House, located to the rear of numbers 13 and 15 on The Chipping in Tetbury, is a former malthouse that has been converted into an assembly hall. It dates back to the early 18th century, with significant rebuilding occurring in 1898 after a fire. The building is constructed of rubble stone and features a slate roof, forming a long L-shaped range. It stands two storeys tall with a semi-basement.
On the raised ground floor, there are two segmental-headed two-light windows, with straight-headed windows positioned above them. A dormer on the right includes a door through the eaves, with an additional door below. Access to the 20th-century entrance on the left is via concrete steps. The building has an off-set feature at head height along its length. The site has been associated with malting since the medieval period, with malting operations ceasing in 1919. Notably, the hall was used during the Second World War for planning the D-Day landings. The Malt House is included for its group value with numbers 5, 13, and 15 on The Chipping.
