Description

This is a group of three cottages at 5, 13, and 15 The Chipping, Tetbury, located on the site of a medieval hall house. Significant portions of the structure date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, with further work from the 15th and 16th centuries visible in the passage between Nos 5 and 13. Nos 13 and 15 have 19th century facades.

The passage between the cottages reveals historic features: remains of an oak screen partition within No 5, and three arches of the 15th or 16th century. Two of these arches are moulded and stopped, while the central one is butted onto a 12th or 13th century pointed arch. A medieval doorway, with studded wide boards and two strap hinges, gives access to the yard behind No 13. No 15 features a medieval arched fireplace and blind pointed arches on the wall facing St. Michael's House. These arches align with a blocked arch in No 22 Gumstool Hill.

No 5 is constructed from coursed dressed stone and has a Cotswold stone slate roof with a stone stack to the right. It is two storeys high, with a central 16-pane sash window on each floor. A 20th century doorway is incorporated within an oak screen partition inside the passage. Nos 13 and 15 are a pair of buildings, also in coursed dressed stone, with a Cotswold stone slate roof, a large central ridge stack, and a smaller end stack to the left. Each has a small gable and steeply gabled porches facing inwards. The two-window elevation at each gable features long, two-light leaded casements with a stone mullion. The ground floor has two three-light mullion and transom casements. The porches are topped with sprocketed roofs and include angled arched doors and a tall lancet window to the front.
