Description

York House is a large house forming part of a terrace, composed of two adjoining buildings. The right-hand wing may have originated as several cottages, dating from the late 16th or early 17th century. The left-hand wing has a later 17th or early 18th century rear and a mid-18th century front. The building is constructed of rendered rubble stone with a Cotswold stone slate roof. The left-hand side features an ashlar frieze, cornice, blocking course, and plinth, and has two tall ashlar end stacks with moulded caps. The front range is joined by a double rear range set at right angles. The house has three storeys and an attic. The front has four windows, all 12-pane sashes with flat stone sills. The ground floor includes three windows and a pair of double doors with a long, plain fanlight to the left. A three-light hipped dormer is also present. The right-hand side has a large blind gable to the street, spanning two storeys and a rear attic, with two widely spaced 12-pane sashes on each floor, and a carriage arch with double doors to the right. Rear brick stacks are present on both wings. The interior of the gabled side features former exterior shutters on both floors, opening into the later 18th century addition which was originally an open yard. The 18th century front has fine depressed arches running from front to back in the central hall, containing an original dog-leg staircase with a ramped handrail, along with many original beams and floorboards. Some original glass remains in the front windows.
