Description
The Old School House is a mid-19th century semi-detached house located in Aldsworth Village, originally listed as The Old School and previously as School House. It adjoins Brightswell Cottage. The house is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, with finer dressed stone at the front, featuring rusticated quoins. The main body has a stone slate roof, while the later rear extensions have concrete tile and red tile. Ashlar stacks are present. The main rectangular section is two storeys high with a three-windowed facade. This facade is lit by two-light, ovolo-moulded stone mullioned wood casements with horizontal glazing bars within architraves featuring shallow stepped mouldings. These casements likely replaced earlier sash windows with glazing bars, as evidenced by the right gable end. A central 19th century four-panel door (with the two upper panels now glazed) is set within a stone porch with a shallow triangular pediment. The main body has gable-end stacks and flat gable-end coping. There is a suggestion that the building may have functioned as an Inn during the 19th century. The interior has not been inspected.
