Description

ALDSWORTH ALDSWORTH VILLAGE SP 1510 11/20 The Old Chapel GV II

Former Wesleyan Methodist chapel, dated 1907 on datestone over front door. Coursed squared and dressed limestone with dressed stone quoins, stone slate roof. Compact irregular plan with square turret front right. 1½ storeys, turret 2 storeys. Facade; gable projecting forwards left lit by two 3-light stone-mullioned casements with transom and stopped hoods. Round-headed window with moulded surround and stopped hood lighting gable. Turret set back right with plank door stopped hood above stepped up over datestone. Double-chamfered single-light casement above with stopped hood, similar windows in right-hand wall. Two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement with stopped hood right. Pyramidal roof splayed out at bottom to turret, finial at apex. Two circular 'pepper-pot' vents on roof axes. Roll-moulded gable-end coping and moulded kneelers to forward facing gable front. Interior not inspected. A picturesque composition in vernacular style.
