Description
The Aldsworth War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of local limestone. It is set on an almost-square platform that is approximately 1.8 meters across.
The memorial takes the shape of an obelisk, standing about 3.4 meters high. It is placed in a chamfered, square socket on a tall, tapering base with a square section. Each face of the base features pediments and a moulded cornice. Below the pediments are depressed fields with moulded edges; two of these fields are blank, while the other two display carved inscriptions.
On the south face, the inscription reads: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE FOLLOWING MEN FROM THIS VILLAGE / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 –1918," followed by the names of 13 fallen soldiers. The north side of the base includes the inscription: "ALSO TO / [the names of the three men commemorated are then listed] / WHO FELL / IN THE WORLD WAR / 1939-1945." The carved lettering on all faces is highlighted in black paint. The base is elevated on a platform with two slightly sloping steps.
