Description

This barn, located approximately 200 meters north-north-east of Cassey Compton Farmhouse, dates from the late 18th century. It features weatherboarding and coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof. The barn has a rectangular plan, with two stone bays at the west end that include a basement accessed from the south. To the right, there is a four-bay timber-framed section supported on staddle stones, although the weatherboarding was replaced in the 20th century.

The south side of the stone part has a plank door at the basement level, with a blocked door above it. The west gable end includes a pitching door, while the north side has a pitching window with double shutters, two slate-hung gabled pitching windows, and a plank door accessed by two stone steps leading to the weatherboarded section. There is also a plank door in the east gable end. The roof is half-hipped.

Inside, the weatherboarding is fixed to close-studded timber-framed walls. The original roof trusses feature collar and tie beams, with queen struts extending just below the collar. There are double butt purlins with straight bracing to the lower purlin. A stone dividing wall with a plank door separates the two parts of the barn. The ground on the south side of the timber-framed section is raised, supported by a semi-circular limestone rubble retaining wall.
