Description
The roadside range of farm buildings at Ampney Sheephouse is a long structure that is open to the west. It includes a former cartshed, animal shelter, and stable. The cartshed and animal shelter likely date from the late 18th century, while the stable was built in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of rubble stone, with coursed stone used for the stable, and the stable has an artificial slate roof.
The cartshed is L-shaped and features a large cambered timber lintel on the south side, with a square opening above it. There is an open bay to the left that is now partially walled up, with an opening to the right and a lean-to structure in the angle behind. The animal shelter was originally composed of six bays with stone partition walls; some bays remain open while others have front partitions and half doors. There are two walls that project forward to the right and one to the left.
The stable has a central small gable with a loft door and twelve stone steps leading up to an opening below the platform. It includes two doors on the right, one on the left, and a small single light. Additionally, there is a small 20th-century lean-to at the north end of the range.
