Description

Pear Tree Cottage is a detached house, originally a farmhouse, that was later divided into two cottages. It dates from the mid-17th century, with a rear extension added in the late 17th or early 18th century. The house is constructed of limestone rubble with dressed stone quoins. The front has stone slate roofing, while the rear has concrete tiles, and there are brick stacks. The building has a rectangular footprint with a lean-to extension along the rear wall. It is two storeys high with an attic.

The front facade is symmetrical, featuring two windows across the front. The ground floor has two four-light stone-mullioned casement windows with stopped hoods and hollow-chamfered surrounds; the left-hand window has a king mullion. The first floor has two three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements, and the attic has a two-light dormer with leaded panes. A central 20th-century plank door sits within a dressed stone surround with a keystone and impost. The right gable end has three four-light stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods to the ground and first floors, and a similar two-light casement to the attic. Most windows have horizontal glazing bars. A gable-end and axial stack are present, along with a stepped coped gable to the right, where a roll-cross saddle sits.

Inside, the ground floor has transverse beams, one with a bar and ogee stops, and another with large ogee stops. A large dressed stone fireplace with a moulded hood is also present, along with a blocked doorway with a stone surround (now partially obscured by a cupboard). The house was formerly known as Fletcher's Farmhouse, and the fireplace is believed to have originated from ‘The Priory’.
