Description
The Red Lion Hotel is a large inn and hotel that was formerly three separate properties. A Lion Inn has been recorded in High Street since 1592, and it is possible that it was located on this site. The buildings likely date from the late 17th century or early 18th century, but they underwent significant alterations in the early 19th century. The exterior is roughcast with a stone slate roof and features three stone stacks. The structure is a single long range with two storeys and one large room on the ground floor.
There are six windows in total: two 12-pane sash windows and four triple sash windows with configurations of 4/12/4 panes. On the ground floor, there is one 12-pane sash and three triple sashes, along with a throughway on the left, which was a former shop and not an original carriage arch. The building has two doorcases, likely from the 19th century. The central doorcase features a wide open pediment on consoles over pilasters, a six-panel door with sidelights, where the top four panels are glazed and the lower two are fielded. The right-hand doorcase has a narrower surround in a similar style, a semi-circular soffit, a radial fanlight, and a door with six fielded panels. The two triple sash windows flanking the central entrance have plate glass lower central sashes. There is also a plaque dated 1843 on the right-hand return of the building.
