Description
Apsley House is likely two former houses that have been combined into one large shop on the ground floor with a flat above. The building possibly dates back to the 16th century but was refronted in the 18th century, with a shop front added in the 19th century. It has a timber frame with brick infill on the right-hand return, a brick front, and a stone slate roof featuring a parapet wall. The right-hand return has artificial stone slates on a hipped gable with a small brick chimney stack.
The structure consists of a single front range with a rear extension, standing two storeys tall with an attic. It has three 12-pane sash windows, with timber lintels on the left and centre, all featuring thick glazing bars. The ground floor showcases a wide 19th-century shop front, which includes four Ionic pilasters adorned with arabesque work in the panel and fluted consoles that cut through the moulding along the top, topped with steep gablets over the end two pilasters. There are plate glass shop windows on either side of a central glazed door, flanked by small canted windows. Additionally, there is a small twin casement window in the hipped end to the right and a small square flat-roofed dormer on the left side of the main roof.
