Description
The New Inn is a large coaching inn dating from the early 18th century, recorded as the New Inn since 1754. It features a brick front and rear with rubble stone on a plinth, and has chamfered alternating quoins. The stone slate roof has a moulded stone eaves cornice, with brick stacks at both ends and one ridge stack, as well as two rear brick stacks. The building has a large single front range with two rear hipped cross ranges and a rear extension forming an L-plan, standing three storeys tall with an attic.
There are six windows on the front, which are 12-pane sashes with thick glazing bars, splayed brick voussoirs, and stone sills. The second floor has six-pane sashes, while the ground floor features three 12-pane sashes. To the left of centre is a large ashlar doorcase with two attached Doric columns on bases with triglyph blocks, supporting a shallow open dentil pediment and a semi-circular soffit with a radial fanlight and an inset lamp. The door consists of six fielded panels. To the right, there is a large depressed carriage arch with a stone keystone and piers. The building also has two small gabled dormers with twin wooden casements and moulded wood pediments. A long 20th-century rear extension is present but is not of special interest.
