Description

The Cottage Shop is a building that consists of two former cottages, which were likely converted into one during the 18th century. It now houses two small shops and a flat above. The original front range probably dates back to the 16th century, with an enlargement on the left side during the 17th century. The building was refronted and raised in the late 18th century. It is constructed of rubble stone with a stone slate roof, featuring a partial slate roof on the rear cross-gabled wing. There are stone end stacks on both the right and left sides, with the right stack having brick top courses.

The building has a single front range with a rear cross-gabled wing to the left and a long stable or workshop extension to the right at the rear, which is not of special interest. It stands two storeys tall at the street front, which has three windows featuring 4-pane sashes with moulded wood architraves and stone sills. The ground floor includes a double-fronted 19th-century shop front on the left with two-light windows, central half-glazed double doors, and a wooden frieze and cornice. To the right is a 19th-century multi-pane window, and there are central double doors leading to a through passage, flanked by timber framing and brick infill. Both flanking rooms feature stop-chamfered beams. The building's stacks have wood newel stairs, although the right stair is partially blocked. The rear of the cross-gabled wing has two 3-light stone mullions with square hoodmoulds, along with the remains of a 4-light window on the ground floor.
