Description
This is a group of six monuments located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Peter in Windrush Village, positioned between the W. Mason and W. Trinder monuments. The monuments consist of a staggered row of four headstones, approximately 2.5 meters to the west and up to 4 meters to the east of the Mason and Trinder monuments. They are made of limestone and date from the early 18th century.
The single headstone on the eastern edge of the group faces east and features an almost illegible inscription plaque with the date 1717. It has a round-headed design with a skull at the center top, from which double proboscis-like scrolls emerge. There is scrollwork on either side of the head, and raised margins flank the inscription.
Another headstone, located about 2 meters to the west and facing west, also has an almost illegible inscription. It displays a cherub's head at the center top, surrounded by scrollwork, with deeply carved fruit and flowers below the head. This headstone features a large egg and dart moulding around the margin of the inscription plaque.
A third headstone, facing west and located northwest of the William Mason monument, has an almost illegible inscription and a raised moulded margin. The margin has a small segmental-headed bulge at the center top containing a flower, with scrollwork above it.
Another headstone, approximately 0.5 meters north and facing east, has an illegible inscription and a moulded margin that steps up over a small winged cherub's head at the center top, with scrollwork on either side. The marginal panels are decorated with ribbon ties and hanging bellflower.
Finally, there is a headstone about 0.2 meters north of the previous one, facing west, with a round head. It features a raised margin with the initials 'R.H.' in large raised letters, with the date likely below ground level. Another headstone, located 2.5 meters west of the row of three headstones and facing west, has an illegible inscription, a moulded hood with a small winged cherub's head at the center top, and scrollwork above, along with marginal panels adorned with ribbon ties and hanging bellflower.
