Description
Pigeon Close/The Paper Shop is a building originally serving as a gazebo and the ground floor of an adjacent premises, which was once part of the Swan Hotel. It has been converted into a shop, currently functioning as one establishment with a house above. The gazebo dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, while the adjacent shop front may also be from the late 18th century. The former gazebo features a large bowed bay with a 20th-century shop front, a stone plat band above, and coursed and dressed stone on the first floor. This level includes a triple sash window with 8/12/8 panes and a curved timber lintel, along with a moulded string course and cornice. The curved pediment has a flattened top with a central Diocletian window, and the building is topped with a slate roof. At the rear, there is a smaller two-storey bow. The address also includes a 20th-century house at the rear, which is not of special interest. To the left of the former gazebo, the ground floor features a wooden shop front with fluted pilasters and a projecting moulded modillion cornice, along with a plate glass window.
