Description

Ryton House is a very large town house in a terrace, originally built in the 17th century and extensively refronted in the early 18th century. It is constructed of coursed and dressed rubble stone on a stone plinth, topped with a stone slate roof that features four stone end stacks with large brick flues and stepped caps. The building has a projecting moulded wood eaves cornice and coped gable ends.

The house is a double range with two storeys and an attic, featuring six 12-pane sash windows on the upper floor, each with moulded wood architraves. The ground floor has five similar windows and a stone doorcase located to the left of centre. This doorcase includes a pulvinated frieze, a moulded segmental pediment with a carved oval panel inset, moulded square jambs, and a lintel. The double doors consist of three panels each, with the top two being glazed and the lower four fielded, accessed by three stone steps, two of which are semi-circular.

There are two flat-roofed dormers, each with six panes. On the left-hand return of the rear range, there is an oval stone-framed oculus at attic level, and remains of a similar feature on the right-hand return of the front range, which has been partially obscured by the roof of Lime Tree Cottage. The rear of the house includes a two-light stone mullion and transom window, a twisted baluster dog-leg stair, and several blocked-up similar window frames. Inside, there are several panelled rooms from the late 18th century, including the hallway, with most of the original joinery still intact.
