Description

The Swan is an inn that has been recorded since 1513, with existing buildings likely dating from the early 18th century on the right and originally featuring a late 17th-century frontage, altered after a fire in the early 20th century on the left. The structure consists of two buildings, with a carriage arch in the right-hand building. Both are constructed of coursed rubble stone, partly dressed, and feature several deep courses, topped with a stone slate roof.

The right-hand building has a stone end stack that is partly external on the right and a brick end stack on the left. The left-hand building has an external stone stack with a brick flue, which is now incorporated into the roof of The Byte to the south. The left side has a single front range and a long rear extension, standing two storeys tall with an attic.

Prominent features include two large gables above restored six-light stone mullion canted bays, each with a two-light stone mullion and square hoodmould in the gables. A central doorcase features moulded stone jambs and a lintel, topped with a flat hood on console brackets, all restored in the early 20th century after the fire. The right-hand side has a single range with the inn located on the first floor only. The steeply pitched roof is adorned with an elaborately carved stone eaves cornice, and there are three 12-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars in moulded stone surrounds.

On the ground floor, there is a large carriage arch to the left and a shop front to the right, which is part of Pigeon Close (The Paper Shop). The rear extension on the left side includes a former stable and loft, featuring a partially hipped stone slate roof and a flight of stone steps leading to the loft door at the rear.
