Description

The Old Forge is a detached house that was formerly a forge and barn, now converted. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and again from the late 18th century to 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof, featuring an ashlar stack and a brick stack.

The main body of the structure is rectangular, built in the late 17th to early 18th century, and has two storeys with an attic. It is illuminated by two gabled roof dormers that contain two-light casements with horizontal glazing bars. The facade has three windows, which include two and three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods and glazing bars. There is a 19th-century four-panelled door with the upper two panels glazed, located off-centre to the left. An early 20th-century street light with wrought iron scroll decoration is positioned at the upper left.

Attached to the main body is the former forge and barn, which has two bays and features two 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars on the ground floor. There is a partially blocked window above with four panes visible at the top, and all windows have timber lintels. The left gable end has a blocked single light with a flat-chamfered stone surround. Above, there is the upper half of a large blocked bull's-eye window with a moulded surround and carved spandrels. The right gable end has a slit vent with triangular vents above. The building has flat gable-end coping with roll-cross saddles, a left gable-end, and an axial stack. The interior has not been inspected.
