Description

Hartwell Farmhouse is a large farmhouse with a date plaque on the front that reads "EC/Hartwell Farm/1780". The building is constructed of random coursed rubble stone with a partially roughcast front, sitting on a cemented plinth. It features a stone slate roof with stone end stacks and renewed moulded cornices on the right front end. The farmhouse has a double range layout, with a lower rear range and a 20th-century flat-roofed section at the back, while the left end includes a cross rear range.

The front of the farmhouse has two storeys and an attic, while the rear has two storeys. There are three gables, each featuring a 2-light stone mullion in flush stone frames with 6-pane wooden casements. The first floor has a configuration of 3/2/3-light similar windows, with a plaque above the centre window. The ground floor includes 3 and 2-light windows on the left, a central door, and 2 and 3-light windows on the right. The stone doorcase has a large flush chamfered lintel and jambs, with double half-glazed doors that were likely added around 1926 when the house underwent significant alterations. A gabled stone porch was also added in front of the door during this time.

Inside, there is a large timber bressumer fireplace at the left end of the room, along with a flat beam. To the right of the main house, there is a small originally separate cottage that is now adjoined to the farmhouse. This cottage is a single storey with an attic and features three 2-light stone mullions and a door in a plain stone surround facing into the house.
