Description
Jesus Almshouse is a former almshouse that has been converted into a detached house. It dates from the early 17th century and underwent extensive restoration in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of random and coursed rubble limestone, featuring an ashlar chimney and a stone slate roof.
It is a single-storey structure with an attic and a central front wing. The front of the building is symmetrical, showcasing a central Tudor arched doorway with a plank door. Above the doorway, there is an engraved brass plate in a chamfered recess that reads: 'JESUS ALMSHOUSE OF HUGH WESTWOOD FOUNDATION'. Centrally above the door, there is a two-light recessed cavetto mullioned casement. On either side of the wing, there are single two-light casements on the front wall of the main block. The building has a central ridge-mounted chimney and single-window mullioned fenestration on the main gable ends, with three lights on the upper floor and four lights on the ground floor at the south end. Most of the casements feature lead latticing, and the gables are topped with ball finials. There is a small outbuilding at the rear that is now linked to the main block. The interior has not been inspected. The almshouse was built for the Hugh Westwood charity by 1607.
