Description

This is a row of three buildings: two houses and a cottage, situated on the east side of the A433 in Bibury. The houses date from the mid to late 17th century, with 19th-century restoration work. They are constructed of random rubble limestone with ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof. The buildings are two storeys in height, with various rear extensions, and a single-storey shop at the north end. The front elevation features five irregularly spaced half gables, each topped with inverted stone cresting where the ridge meets the roof. Most of the second-floor windows are 2-light recessed, chamfered mullioned casements, dating primarily from the 19th century. The ground floor windows are a mix of 2 and 3-light casements. The central shop has a door and a larger window, both set under a combined timber lintel. The doorway to the second house (No. 11) has a moulded stone lintel and a 4-panel door. A 20th-century shop front has been inserted into a former outbuilding at the north end. Three ridge chimneys have plain caps. The buildings are built into a bank at the rear, with two gabled wings. The interiors have not been inspected. The structure was illustrated in “The Minor Domestic Architecture of Gloucestershire” by A. Minoprio and A.T. Broadbent in 1931.
