Description

Two attached houses, dating from the early 17th century, with a later 17th or early 18th century enlargement and a late 18th or early 19th century addition to the rear. Sackville House is built of random rubble limestone, while The Steps is ashlar, both with random rubble chimneys and a stone slate roof. Sackville House is two storeys with an attic block facing the road, and has a smaller, earlier single-storey wing with an attic. The Steps features recessed chamfered mullioned casement windows to the main part, although the upper floor casements are 20th century replacements. A doorway contains a 20th century glazed door and a pitched porch hood, positioned in the angle with the wing. The gable end of the wing has single-window fenestration, with a 2-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement with hoodmoulds to the ground floor and a single-light above, also with a hoodmould. There are two 20th century gabled attic dormers. The south side has 20th century casement windows to The Steps, and mullioned casements in the linking section to the left. The north side shows a rebuilt ridge-mounted chimney on the main gable of Sackville House, with a 2-light casement below, at upper floor level. The interiors have not been inspected. The property was illustrated in “Cottages…in the Cotswold District” by W.G. Davie and E.G. Dawber, published in 1905.
