Description
This is a small orangery or summerhouse located at the eastern end of a garden wall on the northern edge of a lake at Newark Park. It dates from the late 18th century and is constructed of brick, featuring a moulded stone cornice, flat stone architraves, and impost bands, with a corrugated plastic roof. The front has three ogee arches, while each side has one arch, with the right-hand return showing remnants of glazing in the lakeside window. The central arch is open, and the other arches are long windows with stone sills.
The summerhouse is connected to a garden wall that once surrounded the deer park, which is built in a crinkle-crankle style on the north side of the man-made lake. This wall is also made of brick, with plain stone coping in some areas and small raking buttresses. It stands about 2 meters high on average, although its condition varied at the time of the survey in March 1986. At the point where the wall meets the summerhouse, the bricks are almost tumbled into horizontal courses of the summerhouse as the wall slopes down toward the lake.
