Description

Lower Lodge is an estate lodge dated 1853, constructed from coursed limestone rubble with stone dressings. It features a plain tile roof with gable ends, shaped bargeboards, and crested ridge tiles. The building has stone gable end and lateral stacks with tall moulded and polygonal shafts. The layout includes a central cross-wing and a single-storey wing on the right, which has a verandah porch at the front and an outshut on the left side of the cross-wing.

In the Tudor Gothic style, the exterior showcases a one-storey and attic gabled cross-wing with a narrow canted stone bay window on the ground floor. Above this, a moulded stone canopy rises between two shouldered head lancets on the first floor. The single-storey wing on the right has a roof that extends over the verandah porch, which features a chamfered four-canted arch doorway on the side of the cross-wing. The left side has a lean-to outshut with a projecting stone stack, coat of arms, and the date 1853. The rear elevation on the southeast side includes two-light windows in the cross-wing, ground floor windows with shouldered arch heads, a two-light window in the single-storey wing on the left, and a doorway with a shouldered arch head in the lean-to outshut on the right, which has a plank door and wrought-iron hinges. All windows are metal casements with glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected. It has been suggested that Lower Lodge may have been designed by Lewis Vulliamy, who also designed the nearby Westonbirt House and its estate houses.
