Description

The Church of St Nicholas is a small Anglican church that is no longer in use. It likely has its origins in the 12th century, with the chancel being extended in the 14th century. The nave was lengthened and the entire structure was restored in 1873 by Reverend W.H. Lowder. The church is built of random coursed stone and features a stone slate roof that has sprockets at the tower and coped end verges, although some areas were undergoing repair at the time of the survey in April 1986.

The church has a central hexagonal tower, a chancel, a nave, and a south porch. The tower includes a two-light window on each face of the upper section, with a central shaft that has a voluted capital and cable-mould necking set within an arched recess that features chamfered abaci. On the north side of the chancel, there are two cusped single lights and a central priest's door with a trefoil head. The nave has two single lights and a blocked, chamfered, round-headed doorway from an earlier period. The south side has similar window arrangements. The east window features a two-light ogee head design.

The gabled south porch has an inner doorway with two orders; the inner order is similar to that on the north side, while the outer order includes shafts with stiff leaf capitals and additional decorative work that is likely from the 19th century. The church is currently vested in the Redundant Churches Fund and was under repair at the time of the survey. The interior was not accessible, but for a detailed description, reference is made to David Verey's "Buildings of England - Gloucestershire: the Cotswolds," published in 1979.
