Description

Coln House School was founded in 1822 as The Retreat, a private asylum established by Alexander Iles. It was extended in 1829 and became a school for children with educational special needs in 1949. The building features coursed and dressed stone on a chamfered plinth, with alternating flush quoins, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. It has low-pitched hipped slate roofs with scattered stone stacks, some of which are raised in brick.

The large corner building consists of three blocks, mostly three storeys high. The front facing Milton Street has two windows in each block, with 6-pane sash windows on the second floor and 12-pane sash windows on the first and ground floors. There is a continuous sill band on the first floor of the two outer blocks, all set in flush stone surrounds. The central block has windows that are lower on each floor compared to the side blocks.

On the ground floor, there is a large stone doorcase in the right-hand block, featuring attached Ionic columns on bases, an entablature, a pediment, and channelled rustication around the door. The door itself has six moulded recessed panels with sidelights and is accessed by two moulded stone steps. The right-hand block has a curved corner, with the cornice continuing around to the rear. The rear of the building has similar fenestration, although it includes some 20th-century alterations.
