Description

The Bakery comprises two adjoining ranges with gable ends facing the street, originally one property with a house and shop. The building dates to the late 17th century, with later 18th-century extensions to the rear. It is constructed of rubble stone, with painted stone on the street-facing end of the right-hand range, and has a stone slate roof with a concrete tile inner face. Brick stacks are also present. The earlier part of the left-hand return, closer to the street, features two 2-light chamfered stone mullions on the first floor, one similar 3-light window below, and a blocked original doorway distinguished by large stone quoins and a lintel. The rear section of the building, likely from an 18th-century mill, has a cambered stone arched doorway with a wide 4-panel door, now glazed, and a matching window opening to the left. The gable end of the left-hand range is blank, except for a large 20th-century shop window on the ground floor. The right-hand range includes one 20th-century metal sash window on the first floor set within a plain stone surround, along with a 19th-century shop front framed by twin thin decorative columns and a sawtooth cornice.
