Description

Kitsbury Orchard is a detached house with a complex building history, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, with subsequent additions in the mid-18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. The original core of the house is a rectangular block from the late 17th or early 18th century, to which a mid-18th century extension was added at a right angle to the left. A 19th-century barn, now converted, is attached to the right. 20th-century extensions to the rear of both the mid-18th century and 19th-century sections are not considered to be of special interest.

The original block is constructed from sandstone, while the mid-18th century extension is built of coursed, squared, and dressed limestone, with ashlar quoins and stacks. The converted barn is also of coursed, squared, and dressed limestone. The 17th-century block projects forward to the right and has two storeys and a garret, featuring 2- and 3-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned windows with stopped hoods in the gable end and side walls. The mid-18th century wing is set back at a right angle to the left, with two storeys and an attic, and has a 3-windowed facade with 2-light casements. The windows are 19th-century cross windows with wood mullions and leaded casements within plain surrounds with keystones. A central glazed 20th-century double door sits below a keystone, and 2-light stone-mullioned cross windows are found in the left gable end. Gable-end stacks with moulded cappings are present on the mid-18th century section. The interior has not been inspected.
