Description
The Church of the Holy Ascension is an Anglican church built in 1852 by S. W. Daukes. It is constructed from limestone rubble with freestone dressings and features clay plain tile roofs with stone coped gable ends. The church has a plan that includes a nave, chancel, north aisle, vestry located at the angle of the north aisle and chancel, and a large two-storey north porch. It is designed in the Early English style.
The exterior showcases 2-light plate-tracery windows and lancets, a continuous stringcourse at cill level, and buttresses with weathered set-offs. The east end of the church features a triple lancet window and a gabled stone bellcote with a weathervane. The large two-storey north porch has a wooden bellcote, which is said to have been designed by the Reverend W. Wiggin. J.L. Pearson is believed to have contributed to the design of the east end of the north aisle.
Inside, the church has plastered walls, a four-bay north arcade, and a chancel arch adorned with dog-tooth ornamentation in the arch mouldings and capitals. The roofs of the nave, aisle, and chancel are arch-braced, with the chancel roof being panelled and painted. The furnishings are complete and include benches, a reading desk and lectern, a stone font, a pulpit, an organ, and encaustic tiles in the chancel. The windows feature stained glass by Wailes, Clayton and Bell, and Powell.
