Description
Charlham Bridge is a bridge that carries a farm track over a stream, located at the National Grid Reference SU 082999. It is possibly from the 18th century, although there is no firm evidence for dating. The bridge is constructed from limestone and features two arches over the Ampney brook, which connect the former Driffield Manor to Charlham Farm in the parish of Ampney St Peter.
The bridge has a central cutwater supporting two segmental arches, each with a span of approximately 1.5 meters, made of rough stone voussoirs, some of which have fallen out from the north side of the eastern arch. The structure is built of coursed rubble that rises to track level, with the stonework returning for a short distance at the northwest and southwest abutments. It also has large, roughly dressed coping stones at the level of the trackway, some of which are dislodged. The total span of the bridge is about 3.75 meters and it is approximately 3 meters wide. This bridge is an interesting historical feature, situated on a route that is now a public footpath but is primarily used by farm vehicles.
