Description
The Church of St Mary is a small Anglican church with Norman origins, restored in 1734 and again in 1863, possibly by William Butterfield. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone with quoins on the east side, set on a plinth on the north side, and features a stone slate roof with coped verges and cross saddlestones. The church includes a partially projecting west tower, a nave, a south porch, and a chancel.
The tower has three stages without offsets or string courses, except at the base, and is topped with a corbelled cornice and parapet. There is a single lancet window on the west side in the lower stages, and twin louvred belfry openings at the top stages. The restored porch features a pointed archway, an offset plinth, an open traceried window on the left side, and a niche inside on the right. The nave wall has flanking lancets, while the chancel's south wall includes a single lancet and a Decorated two-light, stepped triple lancet at the east end, with a blind north wall. The north wall of the nave has three single lancets.
Inside, the church has a braced collar beam roof in both the nave and chancel. The nave contains box pews with Creed and Pater boards at the west end. There is a series of marble wall monuments in the chancel dedicated to the Hanger family. The altar is surrounded by a "reredos" set with encaustic tiles, and stained glass windows were created by Alexander Gibbs.
