Description

The Post Office and Merlin Cottage form a single building, dating to the 18th century with a 19th-century addition. The Post Office section was built in 1729, as indicated by the inscription "I.C." and the date carved into the stone facade. Merlin Cottage was added in the 19th century.

The Post Office is constructed of finely dressed limestone with a limestone slate roof, flat gable coping, and the remains of ashlar stacks. Merlin Cottage is of roughly dressed limestone with a slate roof, flat gable coping, and an artificial stone stack. The Post Office is rectangular, with the cottage attached to the right.

The Post Office has a symmetrical facade. It is two storeys high with an attic containing two 19th-century two-light roof dormers with wood casements. The facade is divided into three bays; it has two mullioned and transomed casements flanking a central single light with a transom. Modern shop windows are situated to either side of the central section, and below is a modern door with a flat, leaded hood supported on brackets. A continuous band runs above the shop windows. Merlin Cottage is a single-windowed section, featuring two 12-pane wood casements with cambered heads, alongside a modern part-glazed door with a lattice hood.

The gable ends of the Post Office roof have flat coping and repaired 20th-century stacks. Merlin Cottage has flat gable end coping and a 20th-century artificial stone right gable end stack. The interior has not been inspected.
