Description

A terrace of five houses, now flats, numbered 81 to 89, along with attached area railings to numbers 81, 83, 87, and 89, was built around 1820 to 1850. The houses are stucco-faced over brick, although number 81 has a roughcast finish. The roofs are slate, with stucco party-wall stacks.

The terrace has three storeys above basements, originally featuring 10 first-floor windows (two per house). The stucco detailing includes ground-floor rustication and a first-floor band to number 81; a cornice to numbers 83, 87, and 89. Numbers 83 and 89 have parapet walls that ramp up at the ends with copings, while the remaining houses have a lower parapet with copings. The original windows are 6/6 sashes, taller on the first floor, with 3/3 sashes above. All are set in plain reveals and have sills.

Entrances consist of two pairs of 6-panel doors, some part-glazed. The entrance to number 81 has a porch with round-arched openings to the front and sides, supported by Doric pillars.

The wrought-iron area railings have urn finials to the stanchions. First-floor window guards to numbers 83, 85, and 89 are embellished with rods, a lattice frieze, and a central scrolled panel. A window box at number 85 has a scroll motif, and the balcony to number 81 features a "particularly fine" design using rod-and-concentric circle motifs with a central roundel. The porches, except for the one at number 81, have scroll and lozenge motifs, and the left-hand pair retains tent roofs. The railings to number 85 have been renewed.
