Description

Thornbury House and attached railings, located at Belle Vue Place, is a house dating from around 1810 to 1820, as shown on the Post Office Map of 1820. The building features stucco over brick with a slate roof, end stucco stacks, and iron railings.

The exterior consists of three storeys with a basement and attics at the rear, and it has three first-floor windows. There is a first-floor band with a Greek key motif, and the first floor has incised 'Greek key' motifs forming pilaster strips at the ends. The ground and first floors have 1/1 sash windows, while the second floor has 3/3 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. The first-floor windows also feature an incised elongated 'Greek key' motif and a segmental arch above them. The building is topped with a cornice and blocking course.

The central entrance is a six-panel door with a fanlight that has decorative glazing bars, set within a distyle Ionic porch that includes a frieze, architrave, and cornice with a blocking course.

The area railings are notable for their embellished rods and lozenge panels, with the railings to the right featuring flattened spearheads and urn finials. Historically, the building was addressed as Belle Vue Place on Merrett's 1834 Map.
