Description

A house, built circa 1828 to 1840, later converted into flats, situated on the north side of Newbold Terrace East in Royal Leamington Spa. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco to the porch, ashlar sills, a Welsh slate roof, and cast-iron railings. It is three storeys high with a basement and attics, featuring four bays, with the bay to the right being canted from the basement to the first floor.

The main entrance is accessed via nine round-arched steps leading to a double six-panel door, set within a painted stucco porch with fluted strips and an elliptical overlight with glazing bars. A rusticated arch and distyle Tuscan porch with engaged pilasters complete the entrance. A part-glazed, five-panel door is located on the basement level. The windows are generally 6/6 sash windows, except for those within the canted bay, which are 2/2 sashes. They are set within elliptically-arched surrounds with flat arches of gauged brick. A second-floor band and an eaves band are notable exterior features, along with a blocking course. Dormers are present in the attic level, and end and ridge stacks are visible. A continuous balcony on the first floor features pairs of sticks joined by anthemions.

Inside, the open-well staircase has a cast-iron balustrade of a double-scroll design. Shutters are present in some of the rooms. The area railings, and those to the sides of the steps, feature bars topped with anthemion finials. Newbold Terrace began construction in 1828, but the area was not fully completed for many years.
