Description

A terrace of five houses, numbers 8 to 16 Belle Vue Place, built around 1810 to 1820. They are shown on the Post Office Map of 1820. The construction is of ashlar and stucco over brick, with slate roofs visible on numbers 8 and 10; the other roofs are concealed. Tall brick party-wall stacks are located to the left of numbers 8 and 12, and to the right of number 16. The buildings are accompanied by wrought iron railings, window guards and porches.

The houses are three storeys high, with attic windows to numbers 8 and 12. There are ten first-floor windows (two per house). Decorative features include first- and second-floor bands, a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The ground and first floors have mainly original 6/6 sashes, with taller windows on the first floor, while the second floor mainly has original 3/3 sashes. Blind boxes remain to the first-floor windows of number 12. The entrances—mainly four-panel, part-glazed doors with fanlights—are located to the left of numbers 8, 10, and 14, and to the left of numbers 10 and 16, forming pairs except for number 8. Number 8 has a 3/3 sash window in a roof dormer, and number 12 has a skylight. The interiors were not inspected.

The tent porches, shared between paired entrances, have scrolled lozenge motifs to the uprights and embellished lower rods, along with openwork friezes. The first-floor window guards feature varied ornamental motifs. Area railings to numbers 8, 10, and 12 have rose and fleur-de-lys motifs, a lattice band, and scrolled lozenge panels, with lancet design railings to number 14. Number 12 has lancet forecourt railings. The terrace was addressed as Belle Vue Place on Merrett's map of 1834.
